In the same way that transport subsidies will be maintained for the Madrid Metro and Bus networks, regular users of the Madrid Metro and Bus networks will also be able to benefit from Renfe suburban, Rodalies and Media Distancia trains can now obtain the new free subscriptions for travel during the first four months of 2024 (January to April), following the Government’s approval to extend it.
To purchase these new free passes you can do so through the Renfe Cercanías Renfe app and, in the case of Media Distancia and Avant passes, through the Renfe website, taking into account that you must be previously registered.
This pass will be free, four-monthly and personal, therefore, only one pass can be purchased per person, for a maximum of 4 trips per day, to or from the stations of origin and destination chosen when applying for the pass.
Similar to the previous year, in order to purchase these passes, a deposit of 10 euros must be paid for Cercanías and 20 euros for Media Distancia in each four-month period, which is returned at the end of each period if more than 16 trips have been made.
In the case of Avant (Media Distancia de Alta Velocidad), the 50% discount is extended and will also be applied to other high-speed routes that have been declared Public Service Obligations (OSP).
The free Media Distancia travel cards can be used on Avant services on the point-to-point Madrid-Salamanca route and on high-performance lines, such as A Coruña-Ourense and Murcia-Alicante.
How to claim the return of the deposit
At least 16 trips must have been completed in the last four months by the same person in order for the deposit to be refunded. Renfe has already begun to return the bonds since mid-December of the previous year. If the payment was made by credit card, it will be refunded in the same way.
If payment was made in cash, to claim the refund of the deposit it is necessary to show the credit note and the corresponding purchase ticket, as well as the ID card of the person who used and requested the ticket.
